World Sparrow Day - 20th March
A house sparrow was perhaps the most common bird as far as our childhood memories go. Nests found in almost every place our schools, neighborhood trees and even our own homes, where they lived in colonies picking on food grains and seen with tiny worms in their beaks.
Regrettably, the house sparrow is now a declining species. But like all other plants and animals which were once plentiful and are now facing an unreliable future, their numbers are also decreasing across their ordinary range. The causes? The house sparrow is thought to be decreasing for numerous reasons going from the damage of its habitat to shortage of insect food for the young and even the growing effects from mobile phone towers.
The idea was to reserve a day for the House Sparrow to express the message of safeguarding of the House Sparrow and other common birds and also mark a day to appreciate the splendor of the common biodiversity which we take so much for granted. Nature, we must understand, will not be around forever.
